Hey Neighbour,

Did you know elephants casually walked down Nags Head in Holloway? Yeah, not Dumbo but real life circus elephants.

Back in 1969, Billy Smart's Circus was performing at Finsbury Park. The elephants traveled by train from Portsmouth but couldn't fit on a bus from Holloway Park station. So they just walked to the circus with their riders in full costume, a proper parade down the street.

I went to the Islington Archive this week and found this article. Couldn't wait to share it with you.

Plan Your Weekend:

Round Up

Bits and bobs worth knowing.

🗳️ In case you missed it, local elections are on 7 May: This is where you get to vote for the people who decide on things like your council tax, bin collections, local services, parks etc. You might've had letters come around from your local council already. Deadline to register is 20 April (And that's the extent of my political coverage. You're welcome.)

🛒Tottenham Foodbank's in trouble: They're open Mondays and Thursdays right now giving out 3-day food parcels, but they're about to cut that to one day per week. Demand's never been higher but they're not getting enough funding. Costs them £4-5k a month just for food. They also run an advice service helping people sort out the actual problems causing them to need food banks (that's ending too). Been running 6 years. £5 gets toiletries for a family for a week, £10 covers baby food, £20 does an emergency food parcel.

🗺️Help shape Seven Sisters area improvements: Haringey Council relaunching Your Seven Sisters project. The project aims to help improve streets, public spaces, art, signage around West Green Road, Seven Sisters Road, Tottenham Green. Initially started in 2024, stalled, now restarting with a new design team. Want local input on what happens. Sign up for updates, workshops, or join a working group. Deadline for working group: 3 May.

🥳 Know Thy Neighbour is coming back

You voted. 96% of you said absolutely. 4% said they'd sit this one out. That's basically a unanimous yes.

What struck me reading through the comments wasn't just the numbers, it was how many of you couldn't make it the first time. Well now, this could be your chance.

Before we lock anything in, I want to know where you want it. More on that below. But first, a few questions that came up in the poll.

FAQ

I went to the first one, is this just for newcomers? Not at all. Whether you came last time or missed it entirely, you're welcome. And if you're hoping to deepen the connections you made at the first event, good news: the format naturally lends itself to that too. At the first event, most people stayed to continue the conversation.

What's the age range? Will I be the oldest person there? Honestly, it was a real mix. We had people from all generations. There's no "type." If you're reading this newsletter, you belong in the room.

What about parents? Could there be a daytime option? Hopefully, though it depends on the date and the venue. I'm also open to the idea of a KTN just for parents. If that's something you'd want, let me know.

Will it be back in Islington? Maybe! But I'm putting it to a vote. North London is a big area and I want KTN to go where you are. Cast your vote below. 👇

🀄️ I've been wanting to try this for ages

I have a confession.

I've been wanting to learn Mah-jong for ages and still haven't gotten around to it. But that's about to change.

Have you heard of it? It's having a pretty big moment in London right now.

It's like if cards and dominoes had a baby. Both social and competitive, with a good mix of community building and brain game.

With the feedback from Know Thy Neighbour and seeing all the connections made, I'm curious if there'd be interest in getting together to learn Mah-jong.

Basically, community connection disguised as a game.

What do you think? I have a connection who can make this happen for the My North London community. A beginners session, no experience needed whatsoever.

So, who's pulling up a chair, neighbour?

🀄Should I set up a let's learn Mah-jong gathering?
