Plan Your Weekend:

Round Up

Bits and bobs worth knowing.

🌱 Bus stop with plants on the roof just installed in Cricklewood: It’s the first one in Barnet, on Cricklewood Lane. The Roof is covered with flowering sedum plants, absorbs rainwater, attracts bees, and filters air pollution. Idea came from Fiona Quinton, who’s lived in Barnet 30 years. She won BarNET ZERO Challenge where residents pitched climate ideas. And wanted "calming, natural space while waiting for the bus." Council doing another one in next few months. Part of net zero by 2042 plan.

🪁 Free kite festival at Hampstead Heath on 28 June: That's right, Kite Society of Great Britain returning to Parliament Hill Fields on Sunday 28 June. Displays with tricks and routines set to music for about four hours. Bring your own kite or buy one there. Free. Mark your calendars.

🍨 Scooperb ice cream opening North Finchley this Saturday: And the first 100 people get free scoop. Free tasters all week, 10% off opening week. All ice cream's eggless and vegetarian. Plus vegan and sugar-free options. Churned with less air so it's denser and creamier than normal ice cream. Family-run, been in London since 2017.

🏘️ Wood Green's gone backwards while everywhere else gentrifies: Comedian Kobi Coker reckons Wood Green high street looks worse than 20 years ago. "Only place in London gentrified backwards," he said. Watchmaker's been there 38 years, agrees. Used to have tailors, upmarket shops, people traveled to Wood Green. Now they've all closed. His assistant says traders avoid wearing nice jewellery for safety. 95% of customers come from outside Wood Green. House prices: £578k average vs £800k in nearby Alexandra Park and Hornsey. Below London average of £654k. But not everyone thinks it's declining. Some locals say it's kept its culture and diversity while other areas got sanitised. What do you think?

🥬 Stoke Newington grocer Harvest opening in Finsbury Park: Independent health food grocer from Stoke Newington Church Street expanding to N4. Does organic fruit and veg, gluten-free stuff, dairy-free, supplements, natural body care. Family-run since 2016. Also hiring. Email [email protected] if interested.

📍The Girls in North London

You've probably seen the viral video. A content creator maps out the perfect Saturday in North London: Jolene for pastries, the Dalston car boot, De Beauvoir Deli, the Dreamery. It's a nice day out.

But the comment section blew up. Some people loved it. Some said it wasn't the North London they grew up in. One person pointed out that the girls in North London are actually living in Wood Green and going Asda Southgate. Someone else said gentrification is killing us. Others said the places are accessible if you just go.

Seems like everyone had a lot of feelings about this video.

Here's mine.

I don't think the video is the problem. Someone shared their experience of a place they love, and I think there's value in that. But what I found interesting was the framing: "The girls in North London are doing X."

To me North London isn't one size fits all.

North London has a completely different vibe to North West London. Tottenham is not Tufnell Park. Wood Green is not Burnt Oak. Girls across North London live different lives, have different Saturdays, different versions of what a good day looks like. And every single one of those versions is valid, interesting, and maybe worth its own video.

Watching it reminded me why this newsletter is called My North London and not just North London. The "my" acknowledges that your North London and mine might look completely different, and that's not a problem to solve. That's the whole point.

But let the record show. The girls in North London do whatever they want to do.
